Since there are specific questions here that concern me, I am replying to
this email to keep it in thread.
*As of right now, there are no motions on the floor. We are not there yet.*
However, given the overwhelming consensus, I think we will be at the point
of accepting a motion soon to move this committee forward. I really,
really, really want to thank everyone who has been saying they support it.
It makes my job so much easier to know where people are standing,
especially since I can't read body language.
Addressing the first set of specific questions:
*1. What exactly does a "temporary committee" constitute?*
A temporary committee is a group of folks who are members of ASP who are
gathered to do a specific job. The committee is formed to to the job and
disbands when it has completed the job.
*2. What/Who is the "Business Committee"?*
Business committee = business meeting = the group of folks we are right
now. It is a fluid group, convening every other month to deal with issues
that affect the group.
*3. In what way is the temporary committee and its members answerable to
the Business Committee?*
Any temporary committee must report the result of its work back to the
business meeting. At that point the business meeting will take up the
recommendations and issues if it sees fit. It is up to the business meeting
to determine how the temporary committee shall be answerable, such as a set
of recommendations, a proposal, a group of documents.
The second set of questions, coming out of the motion *which has now been
withdrawn*, but I feel need to be answered:
*1. The ASP Secretary will have the authority to form the temporary
committees during Business Meetings?*
As secretary I have *no authority* to form a group/temporary
committee/panel/board/etc at any point nor at any time. That right and
responsibility lies in the business meeting. I want to make this absolutely
clear.
I am not sure how this idea came out of the wording of the now-dropped
motion. It is not in the motion.
*2. The temporary committee works to create a template that will be
presented to the Business Meeting but is not answerable to the Business
Committee?*
Again, any temporary committee is answerable to the business meeting.
I am not sure how this idea came out of the motion, since the motion
specifically stated that the work will be presented to the business
committee. Again, *any* group is answerable to the business committee.
---
I would also like to take this opportunity to emphasize that the business
meeting is the one who controls ASP. Not the trusted servants, not the
steering committee. As trusted servants and steering committee members, we
are as answerable to you as any temporary group would be.
