The acronyms below are those most frequently used in ASP meetings. Many of them do not appear in Conference Approved Literature (CAL), but are posted here for clarification. For a more complete list that includes common texting\/Internet acronyms, please\u00a0consult the\u00a0Acronym Dictionary<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A: Alcoholic<\/strong><\/p>\n

AA: Alcoholics Anonymous<\/strong><\/p>\n

3 A’s: Awareness, Acceptance and Action<\/strong><\/p>\n

ABF: Alcoholic Boyfriend*<\/strong><\/p>\n

ACOA: Adult Child(ren) of Alcoholics<\/strong>
\nSome Al-Anon meetings focus on issues common to ACOA’s, also referred to as Adult Children. Like all Al-Anon meetings, ASP is open to all members of Al-Anon, defined as any person whose life has been seriously affected by another person’s drinking (Tradition 3).<\/p>\n

AD: Alcoholic Daughter*<\/strong><\/p>\n

AF: Alcoholic Father*<\/strong><\/p>\n

AFG: Al-Anon Family Group(s)<\/strong>
\nEvery meeting, including ASP, is considered to be an Al-Anon Family Group. Al-Anon Family Groups is the organization to which all AFG’s belong. Al-Anon Family Groups publishes CAL and works out of the World Service Office. Please see Glossary of Terms<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n

AH: Alcoholic Husband* <\/strong><\/p>\n

AM: Alcoholic Mother*<\/strong><\/p>\n

ANTS: Automatic Negative ThoughtS<\/strong><\/p>\n

AS: Alcoholic Son\/Sister\/Spouse*<\/strong><\/p>\n

ASP: A Serenity Place<\/strong>
\nAn online meeting officially recognized by Al-Anon Family Groups. Please see Al-Anon Electronic Meetings<\/a> for verification.<\/p>\n

C2C: Courage to Change<\/strong>
\nThis is one of Al-Anon’s daily readers, the second one published. Please see the CAL<\/a> page for more information.<\/p>\n

CAL: Conference Approved Literature (Al-Anon)<\/strong>

ESH: Experience, Strength and Hope<\/strong>
\nMembers are always encouraged to focus on their experience, strength and hope when sharing. Additionally, members seeking help for personal struggles will occasionally post off topic (OT) requests for ESH to the meeting.<\/p>\n

F2F: Face-to-Face<\/strong>

FEAR: Face Everything And Recover\/False Evidence Appearing Real<\/strong><\/p>\n

FOO: Family Of Origin<\/strong><\/p>\n

GOD: Good Orderly Direction<\/strong>
\nAl-Anon does not endorse and discourages discussion of any particular religion. Some members don’t believe in God as a supreme, supernatural being, and prefer to think of Good Orderly Direction as their Higher Power (HP). Please see the\u00a0Obstacles to Success<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n

GOMU: God Of My Understanding<\/strong><\/p>\n

HALT: Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired<\/strong><\/p>\n

HFA: High Functioning Alcoholic

HP: Higher Power<\/strong><\/p>\n

JADE: Justify Argue Defend Explain<\/strong><\/p>\n

KISS: Keep It Simple, Sweetheart<\/strong>

NUTS: Not Using The Steps<\/strong><\/p>\n

ODAT: One Day at a Time<\/strong>
\nThis is both an Al-Anon slogan and the title of the first Al-Anon daily reader every published. Please see the Al-Anon Slogans<\/a> and the CAL<\/a> pages for more information.<\/p>\n

OT: Off Topic<\/strong>
\nMembers occasionally send emails to ASP that are different from the day’s topic. They will usually write “OT” in the subject line, often (but not always) followed by a request for ESH from other members.<\/p>\n

RA: Recovering Alcoholic<\/strong><\/p>\n

RABF: Recovering Alcoholic Boyfriend*
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

RAH: Recovering Alcoholic Husband* <\/strong><\/p>\n

SC: Steering Committee

THINK: Thoughtful Helpful Intelligent Necessary Kind<\/strong>
\nThis is a suggestion commonly heard in Al-Anon meetings to ensure that what we have to say is, “Thoughtful, Helpful, Intelligent, Necessary and Kind.” This acronym is often considered synonymous with the slogan, “Think.” Please see the Al-Anon Slogans<\/a> page for more information.<\/p>\n
