Definitions for some of the commonly used terms in A Serenity Place<\/strong><\/em> are listed below. Another, more complete, version (with applications for both ASP and face-to-face meetings) can be found here: Glossary of Terms-Complete<\/a>.<\/p>\n

3 C’s
\n<\/strong>Regarding alcoholism: We didn’t\u00a0Cause it.\u00a0<\/strong>We can’t Control it. We can’t Cure it.<\/p>\n

Al-Anon Member<\/strong>
\nOur Third Tradition says that any person whose life has been seriously affected by another person’s drinking is qualified to be a member of Al-Anon. Any person who qualifies for Al-Anon by this Tradition may consider themselves a member of Al-Anon.<\/p>\n

Business Meeting<\/strong>
\nIn ASP, the meeting in which all business issues are discussed and group consciences are taken. Please see the Business Meeting<\/a> page for more information.<\/p>\n

Closed Meeting<\/strong>
\nAn Al-Anon meeting in which only Al-Anon members are welcomed. A Serenity Place<\/strong><\/em> is a closed meeting, limited to Al-Anon members who have been approved and subscribed to the meeting.<\/p>\n

Conference Approved Literature (CAL)<\/strong>
\nBooks and pamphlets published by Al-Anon Family Groups (Al-Anon World Service). It is against ASP policy for material from any non-CAL source to be quoted or referenced in the ASP meeting. Please see Founding Statement and Policies<\/a> and CAL<\/a> page for more information.<\/p>\n

Cross-talk<\/strong>
\nAn exchange or dialogue between individual members, or an share directed to another member, posted to the entire list. Quoting a portion of another member’s share in en email to the entire meeting is also considered Cross-talk. Cross-talk is discouraged at A Serenity Place<\/strong><\/em>, but it is perfectly acceptable to compliment another member privately on his or her share. Just hit “reply” (not “reply all”) and your response will go only to that individual.<\/p>\n

Experience, Strength and Hope (ESH)<\/strong>
\nA personal sharing of an individual’s experience, strength and hope regarding a topic. Giving advice is discouraged in Al-Anon, but members occasionally post off topic (OT) requests for ESH to help with their personal struggles. Members are also encouraged to share their own Experience, Strength and Hope when sharing in any Al-Anon meeting, including A Serenity Place<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

Greeters<\/strong>
\nThose in charge of welcoming new members to the meeting. They also post a welcoming email to the general meeting, inviting other members to welcome them as well. Please see the Trusted Servants<\/a> page for more information.<\/p>\n

Greeter Chair<\/strong>
\nThe Chairperson of the Greeter Committee. Members of ASP can contact this person directly to unsubscribe from the meeting list. Please see Trusted Servants<\/a> and ASP Instructions<\/a> pages for more information.<\/p>\n

Group Conscience<\/strong>
\nThe opinion of the majority of those in a meeting who are making a decision on a particular issue, usually determined by a voting process. In ASP, Group Consciences (votes on various issues) are taken at a Business Meeting. Motions require a 2\/3 majority of those participating in the meeting. Selection of Steering Committee members requires a simple (more than 50% of those voting) majority. Please see Business Meeting<\/a> and Trusted Servants<\/a> pages for more information.<\/p>\n

List Administrator\u00a0<\/strong>
\nChairs the Steering Committee, supports greeters and list in general. Members of ASP can contact this person directly at list_administrator@asp-afg.org<\/a> with any questions or concerns about the meeting or the behavior of other members. The List Administrator can also assist in changing your email address used for ASP or in unsubscribing from the meeting list. Open Meeting<\/strong>
\nAn Al-Anon meeting in which Al-Anon members and non-members are welcome. (A Serenity Place<\/strong><\/em> is a Closed Al-Anon Meeting.)<\/p>\n

Sharing\u00a0<\/strong>
\nUnlike face-to-face meetings, where members share by speaking in the meeting, in ASP, a member shares by sending an email to the entire membership (asp@asp-afg.org<\/a>). As in face-to-face Al-Anon meetings, members are encouraged, but not required, to share. We are also encouraged to keep the focus on ourselves and to share our experience, strength and hope. Steering Committee<\/strong>
\nThe primary business committee of A Serenity Place<\/strong><\/em>. Please see the Trusted Servants<\/a> page for more information.<\/p>\n

Thirteenth (13th) Stepping<\/strong>
\nIn ASP, 13th Stepping refers to repetitive, unsolicited personal e-mail messages sent to any member of A Serenity Place<\/strong><\/em> by any other member. If someone is “13th Stepping” you, please contact the List Administrator at list_administrator@asp-afg.org<\/a><\/p>\n

Treasurer<\/strong>
\nIn ASP, a member of the meeting who receives the donations contributed according to the 7th Tradition, pays the meeting’s expenses, maintains a prudent reserve, and distributes any remaining funds according to the group conscience. Please see the Trusted Servants<\/a> and Tradition 7<\/a> pages for more information.<\/p>\n

Twelfth (12th) Stepping<\/strong>
\nCarrying the Al-Anon message to others in accordance with Al-Anon’s Step 12: “Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to others, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.” If you know someone who is interested in Al-Anon, you can share ASP’s main website https:\/\/asp-afg.org\/<\/a> or invite him or her to a face-to-face meeting. (Please do not share the ASP Members Only URL with those who are not members of ASP.) You might also offer some written material. Newcomer information packets are available at most face-to-face meetings or you can order them from http:\/\/al-anon.alateen.org\/al-anon-literature<\/a>. You can also refer to the main Al-Anon website http:\/\/al-anon.alateen.org\/<\/a> so that\u00a0he or she\u00a0can learn more about the program and find a local face-to-face meeting. In all 12th Step work it is important to remember that\u00a0in accordance with Tradition 11, we believe in “attraction rather than promotion.”<\/p>\n

\nIn ASP, the individual responsible for updating and maintaining the primary and Members Only websites for A Serenity Place<\/strong><\/em>. World Service Conference (WSC)<\/strong>
\nAn annual meeting of Area Delegates of the United States and Canada, with the trustees, the Executive Committee, and the Al-Anon staff. Representatives from other national general service offices are welcome to attend the World Service Conference.<\/p>\n
