Thank you for your interest in A Serenity Place!
We’d like to walk you through a few things before we connect you with our greeters to join our meeting.
Many people, including many professionals think that Al-Anon is a catch-all 12 Step program for people with all kinds of problems. This is not true. Al-Anon has a single purpose:
“Al–Anon’s Purpose. The Al–Anon Family Groups are a fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics who share their experience, strength and hope in order to solve their common problems. We believe alcoholism is a family illness, and that changed attitudes can aid recovery.”
In other words, Al-Anon is for those friends and family of alcoholics that have been affected by the family disease of alcoholism. While many alcoholics also have other addictions and problems such as drugs, the primary focus of Al-Anon is to solve the common problems experienced by families and friends of alcoholics. We do not discuss drugs or drug addiction in our Al-Anon meeting.
Do you understand that Al-Anon is for friends and family that have been affected by alcoholism – and that other addictions such as drugs, gambling, sex by themselves are not qualifications for membership in Al-Anon?
